sometimes called web name or webname The first thing to think about is "how will people find your website"

Search engine?

tell them domain name in the pub?

on an email?

will they see your webname on the side of your van?

Mostly people will find your domain name by typing it in to Google or another search engine. Your domain name might be passed verbally and if so people need to be able to do that efficiently. So the 3 ways we communicate web names are:

1. Electronically: Search Engines email etc.
2. Verbally: word of mouth
3. Written: business stationery, side van truck building etc.

We have to consider all 3 in that order.

"Branding" is the all important. "Amazon" which is a Jungle in South America does a damn good job of selling books CD's etc.

in the old days you could get ahead by stuffing your domain with as many keywords as possible. So, you got awful domain names like cheap-toys-gifts-birthday.com which were usually the sign of a nasty website aimed at search engines and not very memorable. Try to pick something memorable.

Just about all the words in English dictionary have been registered already so you can forget most of those as possibilities. You are much more likely to succeed if you got for a compound word made up of two or more individual words related to your site. Two words is easier to remember for repeat visitors - one word is ideal, but only if you can get it.

For example: if you want to sell cheap toys and gifts you can be pretty sure that gifts.com and toys.com will be already registered. you could but some of the common ending words on the end like toyworld.com giftsonline.com toys4u.com.
