Best Search Engines
The best search engine is the one which returns what you are looking for and helps you discover something that you weren't particularly looking for.Accuracy is an important factor in search engines and a human powered search engine will be more accurate than a spider crawled search engine result because it is much harder to trick a person than a computer. But Human powered directories are effectively out of date as soon as they're updated where as crawled websites are kept up-to-date far more frequently. I am sure the only reason human powered directories are still used is that the spiders crawl them and rate them highly.
Yahoo charges 2 or 3 hundred bucks per year to be listed which in my opinion is way over priced but because your website has been reviewed by a human being then the other meta crawl search engines regard it more highly than one which hasn't .
The fact still remains that if you change your website once it has been listed in a human powered directory then its going to be quite some time before the listing is updated.
We live in a fast moving world
There is no time for waiting weeks months or years for the search result to reflect what is on your website - the dinosaurs such as yahoo directory and dmoz should have gone extinct by now. Don't get me wrong what the open directory project did was a fabulous thing but today when you submit your website to dmoz nothing basically happens for years I've submitted sites over 4 years ago and they're still not listed. Yet I see advertisements from unscrupulous sources guaranteeing inclusion within days. I hear stories where entire categories are "sewn up" where one person or organisation controls all the reviewers for that category.
Final Word
For me Google and spider based search engines are working hard to provide me with relevant results for my searches and directories just want to charge me money.
Google is the best search engine
